Balance and composure are a post-hardcore/punk band from Doylestown. They have just released a split with another awesome band, Tigers Jaw, on No Sleep Records. Their side is definitely the better one and sounds a bit like a Deja Entendu era brand new. Below are their two EPs they have out thus far and the new split. The first was self-released in 2008, titled, I Just Want to Be Pure. The second is the No Sleep released 2009 EP called Only Boundaries and the last one is the new split (which I just ordered on vinyl today...can't wait!).

Pianos become the teeth are an excellent ambient screamo outfit from Baltimore, MD. Mixing elements of post rock, hardcore and real screamo influences, they have created a sound which is emotionally heavy and intense. The songs make me feel very melancholic and I love the way they convey their emotional intent perfectly. However my favourite thing about pianos become the teeth and what really makes the band for me are Kyle Durfey's heartfelt personal lyrics. Below is a really good interview which explains some of the lyrical themes. They recorded an EP in 2008 entitled Saltwater which was later followed by the full album, old pride. I'll just post the EP as it's my favourite of the two. Also below is a music video that actually gave me cold shivers for their song "the houses we die in" from their saltwater EP. For fans of I would set myself on fire for you, Suis la lune, Touche amore and La dispute, etc. etc.

Broken social scenes new album is out next month! I haven't heard it yet but everyone that I've spoken to who has, have confirmed it as a classic. I found this E.P. on another blog, apparently it came with BSS's first album and is essentially a b-sides record. Title fight are a high energy melodic punk band from Kingston (not the one here but the one over in the America). Their first record, Kingston, was one of my favourite records of last year and now the band is back with a 12-song collection that includes the 3 songs from the Kingston 7″, three new songs and 6 more songs all in under 27 minutes. If you are a fan of bands like kid dynamite and lifetime you'll dig this band.

Kim Herbst is a freelance illustrator for Brooklyn who recently caught my eye on illustrophile. Most of her work is done in a comic book style as she works as a games artist, however I'm in love with her other illustrations as shown above and below. Check out more of her work here!

O h so so many new bands I need to blog about! I've found loads of new amazing bands which I'm going to be blogging about in the next few posts, I'll start with my favourite of the bunch, slingshot dakota! I just got their 2nd self released album which is called Their Dreams Are Dead, But Ours Is the Golden Ghost!?
and although they're now only a two piece (Jeff Cunningham of Bridge and Tunnel used to play guitar with them) the record sounds as gigantic as johnny vegas with a megaphone riding that thing from cloverfield's back. Their sound is really familiar but also completely original if I had to describe them I'd say they sound like a menage a trois between alanis morissette, vanessa carlton and brendan canty in a punk rock squat. There isn't a single weak song on the album and I can honestly listen to it all the way through without even thinking about the skip track button, which is an incredible feat for someone with an attention span like mine! Below is the album (which as you know if you read my blog I did not upload) which you should listen to, realise I am completely right about their awesomeness and buy their record here!!!!!!!

Best friends forever are another awesome band I've stumbled across lately and have really fallen in love with, mainly because I'm a sucker for cutesy lo-fi female fronted indie pop and this band tick all those boxes! Bri Smith & Jes Seamans who have been friends and making music together since they were 13 years old, write quirky, stripped down pop songs that sound like a water fight on a hot summers day with all of your closest friends. HEEEEEEEEEEEY wOW I have been a lazy little shit! I mean it really wouldn't have been too much effort to post something, anything in fact in the last two months! I could lie and say I've been really busy but to be honest I really haven't had the motivation! I put it down to post holiday blues..... the come down from escaping the reality of everyday life is a bitch! Especially when you go from a beautiful, exciting, colorful island filled with beautiful friendly people to a industrialized, boring, grey island filled with depressed, hostile, shit people. Reality really kicks you in the fucking face and shouts (in a Mr.t accent of course) "Fool! You thought you could replace me with sunshine and girls! Motherfucker I ain't going anywhere! Boy better know financial slavery, demeaning mc-jobs and a whole load of generation X-factor idiots is all you got ahead of you!" Le sigh....... Imma gonna start posting again.

Stumbled across Devin mcgrath on illustrophile the other day and I think his work is pretty pretty pretty pretty pretty good! Also I like his bio :-

I had the pleasure of watching Brendon Burns perform in London last month with Josie long, Stewart Lee and Simon Amstell. Brendon headlined the night exploding onto the stage with a set that had me gasping for breath as I laughed so hard I cried. Brendon who won the famous if comedy award (previously called the Perrier award) in 2007 for the below posted show So I Suppose This Is Offensive Now will be appearing at the fringe festival on the 28th and 29th with his new show comedy good yeah silly side cunt.

Charlie Brooker writes a review column for the Guardian, he was a writer on the amazingly brilliant paedophilia special of brasseye and then went on, along with Chris Morris, to write Nathan barley. All of this I knew however what had evaded me up until last week was his brilliantly brilliant shows screenwipe and newswipe! The fact that these shows have eluded me is probably down to me not watching bbc 4 or any TV in general for a very long time. However I still find it hard to believe that screenwipe, which has been running since 2006, has never been mentioned to me by anyone nor have I seen it reviewed on the Internet. Weird! Screenwipe, which first aired in april of 2006, is a look at all of TV. From the way it's edited to what amount of money is spent on a show to ratings to how TV is regulated. It's like a British version of pen and tellers bullshit except it just concentrates on a different area of TV each episode satirically tearing it to pieces with witty humor. Newswipe is essentially the same show except it concentrates on the UK news media. Another show worth checking out is his newest show "you have been watching" which airs Thursdays on channel 4 at 10pm.

I've been listening to a lot of Dubstep recently mainly due to the fact it's forced on me living with an 18 year sibling going through her adolesent loud fast (or in this case slow) music phase. One of the few producers that has made me pluck my ears up with intent is bristols joker. Being an electro head myself his computer game inspired productions appeal to me the most. Arrested development's David Cross (tobias) has written and started filming a new British TV show starring will arnett!!!!! "The Increasingly Poor Decisions Of Todd Margaret" Has been picked up by channel 4 and is due to air in December! Written by Cross and English actor/comedian/writer Shaun Pye, 'Todd Margaret' is culture-clash comedy which centers on a U.S. executive protagonist who is mistakenly sent to Britain to run the company’s UK division and finds himself in over his head. The Russo Brothers, who helmed many episodes of "Arrested Development," directed the show's pilot which co-stars Cross himself, Amber Tamblyn, Sharon Horgan and Russell Tovey.

Apparently wild monkeys in India have gotten to be such a huge problem that the Indian government has suggested putting the most badly behaved monkeys into a behaviour school! I'm not sure if this is a joke or what? Surely they can't be serious?

Next month I will be partaking in the mass exodus of Britain that happens every summer commonly referred to by the average British proletariat as "Going on my summer holz". Although it makes no sense (at all!) To leave the country the only time of year when we get anything remotely like nice weather, I've booked a flight out of this bitch. So in preparation for lying on a beach while I drink alcohol poison inducing cocktails and cook till my imminent melanoma is actually audible, I decided a trip to the book shop was essential. Upon arriving I headed straight for the philosophy section intent on buying a book by the modern philosopher, Simon Critchley, who is featured in this months vice. Unfortunately they only had really really expensive Critchly hardbacks so I ended up buying some other philosophy books including Descartes most key writings for £3.99! One of the books, The Consolations of Philosophy, I noticed had been turned into a TV series a few years back for Channel 4, so not wanting to go over board on the book buying I decided to go home and look for the T.V. series. Well I found it and watched all 6 episodes last night and fuck me they're awesome! I strongly recommend you watch this entire series. It is full of extremely clever ideas about love/self esteem/ happiness/anger from some of the worlds brightest philosophers cleverly delivered by Alain De Botton author of the book. I seriously cannot recommend it enough.

A while back I mentioned that I had engineered an awesome band in work called will it fly? Well I finally managed to get my hands on two tracks off their forth coming E.P! The untitled E.P is set to be released this september and will feature 6 songs. Anyone who likes the style of the bands I blog about will definitely like these guys. I intend on putting on a show in the near future for these guys and another couple of awesome bands (Rico and the thieves check them out!) so when I get around to organising it I'll keep you updated! I've been reading a lot of Bukowski recently so I thought I'd post up an incredible documentary on the man himself. Charles Bukowski's work is raw and brutally honest. As in comedy the best jokes are reality based, his story's are so fucking good because they scream sincerity, an attribute bukowski learned at a young age from his father who beat him every single day up until the age of 12. He often stated that his "horror show" childhood made him a very blunt honest man, this allowed him to write without worrying about how his poetry should look or what other writers were writing. As he put it "as the spirit wanes, the form appears" meaning poets with no soul would resort to form to mask their lack of spirit. The same applies to all art forms especially music, too many bands/musicians are concerned with sticking to a specific genre and worrying about what their target audience would like to hear instead of just fucking putting their heart into it and writing songs that have some fucking emotion to them.......fuck I'm starting to sound preachy. Anyway I think this poem of his sums it up pretty nicely //

Belgian born koen creatively blends beautiful surrealistic imagery into his design work making him unique and extremely sought after in the advertisement world.

New york based video artist Robbie Cooper first made a name for himself back in 2004 with a project called alter ego. The former photojournalist's project was basically photos of online gamers next to pictures of their virtual reality characters and explanations as to why they chose their characters, in an attempt to find out if peoples real lives, echoed their virtual reality lives. He has now started a new project entitled immersion, in which cooper plans to film hundreds of people as they immerse themselves in different types of media (films, video games, tv programs). The first set of pictures in the series, released in November, was of kids as they played different video games, those pictures can be found here. More interestingly though his most recent film in the series is of 3 girls and 3 guys discussing their relationship with porn and capturing some truly weird video/stills of humans at their most vulnerable of times.............in case you missed that this guy filmed these people's facial expressions whilst they fucked themselves in HD aaaaand.......put it on the Internet! You brave brave people.

Gregory Crewdson is an American photographer who takes surreal stepford wives esq photos of American homes and neighbourhoods. Crewdson, who as a teenager was a member of the new york punk band the speedies, has been taking photos since the 80's and has taught photography at many U.S. universities. His pictures appeals to me a lot because of the dark surrealistic nature of his scenes, you can definitely see his influence in my previously featured artists alex prager and fellow New Yorker lyndon wades work.

Expect my posts to fluctuate in accordance to how much money is in my bank account, because lets face it, getting drunk on sailor Jerrys and staring at girls in a bar or a club, is waaay better than getting drunk on aftershave and staring at girls at home on the Internet and that is a scientific fact, from science. Lars von trier, the son of nudist communist parents, was always going to turn out a leftist. His approach to avant-garde film making spawned the birth of the danish film movement dogme 95. Dogme 95 is basically a refusal by certain film makers to use special effects, Hollywood budgets, cheap gimmicks and post production modifications, the idea being to focus on the actual storylines and the actors performances. His new film antichrist, starring Willem dafoe, is about a grieving couple who retreat to their cabin ‘Eden’ in the woods, hoping to repair their broken hearts and troubled marriage. But nature takes its course and things go from bad to worse. This film caused a massive stir at Cannes this year as it seems to suggest that women are evil and medieval witch burning was justified..............yeah and???? Whatever the interpretations of this film it made 4 people faint during it's showing at cannes so you just know it's going to be a fucking awesome surreal fest of avant-garde cinema that can't be missed. No uk release date as of yet I'll keep you posted though.

It sucks when a band you love break up. Especially after just one album, because you can only listen to one album (even if it is 34 songs long) so many times before you get bored and although the many other bands that they go on to form fill the void a little, you're still hoping and praying for something new. In case you haven't guessed I'm talking about cap'n jazz, who broke up in 1995. Although I was only 9 at the time, I'm sure being a young musical Jedi I must have sensed something had disappeared from the world and probably cried or shat myself or both because for about a year afterwards I felt an ultimate sadness........ completely void of emotion.... empty....an emptiness I choose to fill with alcohol and drugs..........bad times, Age 9-10 was a dark period in my life. Here are some of my favourite "kinsella worship" bands that are still together, do not feature any members of cap'n jazz and stop me from reverting back to my pre-teen drug binges.

If cap'n jazz were a person and had a slightly eccentric twin Algernon cadwallader would be that twin. The band sounds almost exactly like cap'n jazz but different enough for it to have it's own personality, the vocals especially are uncanny! You can buy the AC album here and also a limited press of their 7" which shall be mine as soon as it's back in print!

I really do not get why anybody would find getting this wasted fun! It's fucking disgusting, this weekend binge drinking culture is turning men into primitive apes and women into uninhibited cum dumpsters. Why certain people are unable to enjoy alcohol and drugs in moderation is beyond me, this does not happen in other countries so why here? These pictures were taken by polish photographer Maciej Dakowicz in my home town of Cardiff, in a recent newspaper article maciej, who has spent the last 4 year documenting british nightlife, commented:

"Everywhere I go I like to take pictures of the people and surroundings. I had never seen such scenes in Poland or any other country I had visited before. What I have seen in my time in the UK has been something completely new to me."

Maciej is releasing his photographs in a book called Cardiff at night.

Free agents is a 6 part comedy series that aired in march of this year. I decided to give it a watch because Matthew Holness (Garth marenghi's dark place) plays one of the characters in the series and he is a funny funny guy! The series as a whole is not amazing but it does have some really funny laugh out loud moments usually involving Anthony head. Here is the whole series give it a watch if your bored and in the mood for some non cringey rom com laughs:

Only joking I do love me some coeur de pirate though! Her voice is like pure silk and I can't think of anything better to listen to on a Sunday afternoon. CURSIVE- WHAT HAVE I DONE?

Oh Bianca, Sierra, how I love your head space, if more people thought like you the world would be a nicer place to live in. Cocorosie have been an obsession of mine for a while, not just their music but the whole mythology that surrounds the two sisters. Bianca and Sierra were born in iowa, their mother was an artist who constantly moved the sisters around the country and their father, a teacher, was involved in shamanism and the native american peyote religion. After losing contact with each other they eventually met up again in paris where Sierra had been training to be an operatic singer and the pair recorded their first album la masion de reverie in her bathroom! Brand new have announced they have started mixing their new album with Dave Sardy and are expecting to release it this summer!

One of my new favourite Cardiff bands, Samoans, have been in the studio and recorded an amazing 5 track demo. Dan, tal and calvin make up samoans who sound a bit like early hopesfall crossed with american football/ghost and vodka with the vocals of a young simon neil. Their music is definately the culmination of lots of different influences and their live show is full of passion and energy. Their whole demo is available to listen to on their myspace and also check out dan's other band circa regna tonat here.

.....The tape of loooove! Mark khaisman created these fucking stunning pictures using nothing but sticky tape!!! Time consuming and I can imagine extremely frustrating (loosing the end), mark layers sticky tape onto plexi-glass panels to create pieces that look like what I imagine neo would have seen in the matrix had he been slightly colour blind. Went to the pop punk party at the old blue last week, nostalgia ensued........
I haven't heard some of the tracks they played in ages and it made me weep with joy and sweat.....mostly sweat. So here is a run down of the albums that I remember getting played

Walked in the place after being thoroughly search by the doorman (my friend almost didn't make it inside due to some "suspicious looking" vitamin tablets he had on him!) and they were playing ruby Soho! Not pop punk at all but still awesome tune got me singing straight away and reminded me how much I love rancid. I bought out come the wolves at the age of 14 whilst holidaying in Florida, every time I listen to this album it reminds me of hot sun, Florida beaches and being young, completely awesome summer album!

Solutions are a 3 piece punk rock band from Cardiff, who as well as being a fucking rad band are awesome guys to boot! The band, who sound like tom gabel fronting, won era, as friends rust boiling in a pot of hot water music (check out my creative writing pun skillz) are one of the most refreshing punk bands to come out of Cardiff in a long time. They have just finished recording a few tracks with carl bevan which I believe they will be releasing soon as an e.p. which everyone should definitely buy! Here's my favourite track of theirs:

I'm slacking I know! I've been busy as fuck at work this week and at some points felt like crying..... my p.a stopped working half way through a packed gig, sound engineering can be fucking stressful! I got to mix some awesome bands though like.......

who were supported by an awesome new band called will it fly? I will be blogging about them as soon as they sort out a recording!

Most people know who Richard Kern is, but for those of you who do not, he is the man with literally the best job ever. Kern grew up in new york at a time when the art scene was exploding, he ran a zine called the heroin addict, hung out with artists/musicians like Lydia Lunch, Henry rollins, kim gordon and made videos for bands like sonic youth and the butthole surfers. He wrote and directed many low budget 8mm films in the 1980's which mainly focused on sexual fetish and violence, which led him, along with a few others to become a main pioneer of the cinema of transgression movement. Since the 1990's he has mainly just been doing awesome still photography work, which judging from his vbs show consists of him getting beautiful models high and naked while taking photo's of the proceedings.......bastard.

Possibly THE creepiest non fictional thing I have ever seen. Louie Theroux and his film crew go to a mental facility for ex-convicted sexual deviants in California and witnesses a Halloween celebration where they film something I have been having nightmares about for a week now. Giraffes? giraffes! are a 2 piece math/prog rock band from Massachusetts who met in college and released their 2nd album titled more skin with milk mouth in december of 2007. It's awesome! I finally got to watch this film the other day after deciding not to attend last years frightfest and fuck me it is harsh. I mean really harsh I literally had to turn away from the screen in parts, but if your going to make a shocking horror film you should do it right and Pascal Laugier really surpassed himself. I now cannot wait for the new hellraiser film which he has written and directed let's hope hollywood hasn't turned him into a pussy.

Lyndon wade is NYC photographer who shoots for really famous ad agencies. His pictures are mostly in the style of still frames from weird fucked up movies, I love them! Check out his series here called the birds which features kids that look like they have just stepped out of silent hill and not the shitty film they made, the original dark as fuck computer game.

Lyndon wade being from new york has never been in a pub in the welsh valleys before however one of his pictures (below) suggests otherwise.

Is this the start of me getting old and saying things like "In my day musicians played instruments" because I seriously do not fucking get this......... like at all! I did laugh at the bit where the guys in the "band" scream in the faces of girls dancing like they're in a 50 cent video. Le sigh.

Pop unknown were one of my favourite bands on deep elm. From austin texas the band consisted of Tim Lasater (vocals/guitar), Gabe Wiley previously in mineral (drums), Joel Ganucheau (guitar), Matt Breedlove (guitar) and Casper Echols (bass). The band toured with bands like jimmy eat world, the get up kids and pedro the lion eventually disbanding in 2002 after their side project band, kissing chaos, took over and ended pop unknown. The august division was the bands last studio album and in my opinion their best! All the songs on the record are so fucking catchy and have influenced bands (been ripped off) time and time again.

Wow Alex prager you are a genius! Every photo I've seen has been amazing, her work is super vivid and saturated, retro yet also contemporary. Alex's photos also have a dark twisted undertone too, which reminds me of David lynch's dreamy, surreal, yet dark style. Alex Prager lives and works in Los angeles where she has been taking pictures since her early twenties. Her first book, The Book Of Disquiet was published in 2005 and since then she has displayed her work in numerous galleries, including the michael hoppen gallery in London and more recently in new york.

Cap'n jazz were only around for a little while but in that time they made such a huge impact and influenced so many muscians plus they have the best named album ever......ready.... it's called [burritos, inspiration point, fork balloon sports, cards in the spokes, automatic biographies, kites, kung fu, trophies, bananna peels we've slipped on and egg shells we've tippy toed over]....or shmap'n shmazz for short. After cap'n jazz broke up the band formed loads of other amazing bands including american football, ghosts and vodka, owls and Joan of arc. Favourite songs of mine are in the clear, we are scientists!, oh messy life and troubled by insects. I'll only post the 1st cd of their analphabetapolothology if anyone wants the 2nd cd leave me a comment and I'll post it!

I'm not sure where I found this pic or who it's by but naked women and cats are a winning combination.

I'm a massive arrested development fan so with the news that all the actors are now doing the movie (Finally Michael Cera you douche) I've started getting really fucking excited! But that 's at least a year away so to keep my mind occupied till then I've been watching better off ted which is in a similar comedy vein as AD and also stars portia de rossi. I started off my first post with the awesome band native and following on a mid-western tip here are the reptilian. The reptilian from kalamazoo Michigan are touring buddies of native and play a similar style of emotional math rock. There's no uk release for their e.p. entitled boys life but you can order it from their record label website here. Li Wei is a 37 year old performance artist from beijing who has traveled all over the world creating his amazing death defying photos. Check out his work here.

I work as a sound engineer for a well know music venue chain in the uk ( I'm sure you can work it out there is only one after all!). This is an awesome job MOST of the time as I get to listen to loads of bands meet awesome people and take time off whenever I want. However there is a down side, this being the fact that 80% of the bands that I have to listen to and engineer are complete shit and wonder why no sound will come out of their guitar amp when they have plugged into the bass amp next to it (I shit you not this actually happened!) So it's always awesome when I get into work thinking that I'm going to have a shit shift, due to the fact I haven't heard of any of the bands playing and I find a new band I fucking love.
Strange news from another star are a three piece band from Cardiff which combines refused style riffs with off beat at the drive in drums and early future of the left style vocals. Their live shows consist of boiler suits, an elevated bass player (he stands on a stool) and guitar thrashing dance moves. The e.p. double denim: full frontal is awesome however it doesn't really capture the raw energy this band gives off in a live performance so buy the c.d and definitely catch them live!

So I'm going to be posting some music/films/pictures that I think are fucking awesome, for no other reason than, they're fucking awesome and you always have room for some more awesome shit in your life! The photo above is by San Fran based artist and photographer Merkley??? I first discovered this guys work after he did the press shots for one of my favourite Dj/producers Claude vonstroke which you can see here.
Merkely??? creates his amazing supersaturated images using nothing more than ordinary cameras, available lighting and the magical photoshop. His artwork is even more surreal than his photo's and I literally have spent hours just staring at his website which you can find here.

Native from eerie Indiana combine kinsella style riff tappery with youth crew shout alongs and dance worthy basslines. To put it simply these guys fucking own. Their debut e.p. we delete; erase, has not left my c.d. drive since I got it (over a week ago) and I have been eratically shouting their lyrics at my computer screen all week. They're on sargent house records (These arms are snakes, daughters, this town needs guns) in america and big scary monsters records (pulled apart by horses, tubelord, meet me in st.louis) will be releasing "We Delete; Erase" on April 20th in the UK and Europe. If you like the track below please buy the record from big scary monsters webstore as record sales in the uk will greatly increase the chances of the band doing some uk shows and I for one definately want to see these guys in my town.
